Oscar Wilde In Rome - Private Tour

The damned poet Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) travelled to several towns in Italy: from Florence to Naples, to Genoa and Milan just to write a few…. In 1900  - the same year when he died – he arrived in Rome, on Holy Thursday. He met the Pope and received his blessing.

When writing to his friend Robert Ross, he states that Rome is ‘the city of his soul’, which pairs with his idea of ‘beauty as redeemer of the world’. His turbulent life-style, with excess and squandering, jail for sodomy and a fake wedding with a rich woman, tells the story of a man who fought for freedom with his literature, in a time of harassment and  prejudice.

In Rome, he will stay in a modest guest-house in Spagna Square, ‘Cook & Son’. During his last stay, he enjoyed the beauty of Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain. He visited, amongst the others, Palazzo Massimo  (the latter, part of the National Roman Museum).
